Thursday morning

The header I have put up today is a picture of a quilted  table runner my good friend and fellow blogger Mary at http://faithfabricandphotos.blogspot.com
    made for me and it represents a dozen beautiful eggs along with 3 chickens on the bottom, and yellow buttons for corn. I absolutely love it, and will be using it for a table runner on my Thanksgiving table this year.
 The girls all went out fairly early and I found them later sitting in the sun soaking up some warmth. All my chickens are free range, but we have them pastured behind a 6 ft. chain link fence because of preditors.

As soon as they see me walk toward them, they all race toward the fence looking for any treats I might have. On these really cold mornings I sometimes cook them up steel cut oatmeal mixed with raisins, apple chunks, a little scratch, and maybe some crushed peanuts. They LOVE it. Of course I wait till it cools a bit, and I don't give it very often, but it's a warm treat on these frigid mornings..

Sorry I haven't been posting lately. It's been a busy summer.
I've recently added 8 Golden Comet hens to my flock, and we are getting lots more wonderful eggs now.

I guess I posted this on my other blog http://woodynookcreations.blogspot.com but this is Christopher my new Splash Cochin rooster. I drove to Ohio last weekend to bring him back along with 3 hens. They are just the sweetest little chickens ever.

Funny!

Check out these eggs! The small( teeny) egg was layed the same day that the extra large one was, from different hens of course. That little one was from one of Steve's hens. Every once and a while he gets a couple of these, and there is never any yolk inside.. The quarter is for size comparison.

Macro Monday

We have several different colors of chickens, and this particular hen is called a Golden Laced Wyandotte. If you look closely at the feathers, you might think they resemble fronds on a fern.

Good Dozen!

Just an example of a good dozen of eggs from today. The big one 2nd from the left top row is the size of a duck egg. "Double yolker" for sure. It's only the 2nd one I've gotten, but Steve's hens are great at laying these big whoppers. The girls are just about up to full laying capacity now, and we usually have plenty of fresh eggs to sell."

Cold and snow!

Yes the hens are doing great and even a few have ventured outside in the snow. Tonight I put a good 4" of new bedding in their coop and I am sure they will love it. At Mom's barn I did the same for the big pen and the bantams.

Three Freckled eggs

One Copper Maran chicken laid the eggs in the back. She is black with dark brown feathers around their neck. We have three of the chickens. The three chickens are all sisters.

Big doubles!

These big ones were layed just the other day. The picture was taken by my 9 year old daughter. She did a great job. They also tasted great!

Waiting in line

We( son Steve and I ) have 42 laying hens between both homes and this is a new gal at my farm getting ready to lay, but she wants a nest that is already taken. She stood there for quite a while hoping and waiting, but the white hen wouldn't budge. Hens tend to lay in the same nest every day. The white one is a Light Brahma, and the black one is a Langshan mix that I hope will lay green eggs. She is a newbie, and I don't know what she will give us yet.

We won't post every day, but do stop back now and then to see what our girls are up to.

Welcome to Woodynookview Egg Farm's blog!

My Mom and I have 42 laying hens between two coops that supply us with fresh eggs daily. Our birds are cage free, and are alowed to go outside in pens (we have to have them fenced because of predators) daily and just be themselves. From time to time we will post pictures and stories about them.
